Liquid petroleum gas (LPG), usually known as cooking gas, is one of the major energy sources that form a basis for activities in the national economy, in the fields of industry and agriculture and in the domestic and institutional sectors.
The LPG industry in Israel comprises a broad, nationally deployed system, and includes facilities for the production, storage, filling, handling, and delivery of LPG to consumers. It is operated by authorized gas companies. Consequently the treatment of LPG obligates the observance of rigorous safety procedures at all levels of operations, because LPG is both inflammable and explosive.
The inspection and safety division was established in 1994 with the aim of supervising the LPG industry. The division grants operating licenses for gas companies and LPG installations and strives to improve the standard of safety and to eliminate safety hazards, with the aim of achieving a proper level of safety for the LPG industry in Israel.
The division strives to place the subject of LPG safety on the national agenda and to assimilate it in decision making processes in central and local government. The division strives to increase cooperation with public bodies and to harness the local authorities to this task, including tightening inspection and cooperation with the authorized gas companies in Israel.
The division regards the gas consumer public as a full partner in its attempts to raise the standard of safety, and strives to increase awareness by the publication of considerable and available information, including in the website of the division, which was recently upgraded. The cooperation includes providing aid, advice and training, for the benefit of the consumer public that visits the website of the ministry, regarding various LPG subjects.
