Electricity represents the basis for growth and activity in all sectors of the economy, and the Ministry of National Infrastructures has strived consistently over the years to strengthen the electricity economy and its future development, while minimizing the external effects caused by it. The electricity economy and the natural gas economy are fully interlinked, thus permitting mutual development.
The Ministry of National Infrastructures acts alongside additional involved government bodies in order to improve the efficiency of the electricity economy and promote competition in it. The advancement of technology and the introduction of natural gas have reduced the advantage of size in the sector of the production of electricity, and have made competition in it worthwhile from the national aspect.
The forecast of demand for electricity, that was carried out as part of the master plan for the energy economy, predicts continuing increased demand for electricity in the future. It is expected that the total demand for electricity will be doubled within about 20 years.
The Ministry of National Infrastructures aids in the preparation of the economic and legal infrastructure for changing the structure of Israel Electric. This process does not harm the continuation of the plans for the development of the electricity economy and production in Israel Electric (that is currently not unified) in order to provide the economy with the electrical basis required for its development. The majority of the production capability planned to be set up lies with natural gas, but some of it will also be based on coal because of economic and strategic considerations.
