The challenges of Israel’s infrastructures
GovXParagraph1 The mission that the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources faces is highly complex, due to Israel’s unique energy and infrastructure challenges. The country’s geopolitical situation makes it a “solitary island” with regard to infrastructures, and prevents it from relying on the energy infrastructures of neighboring countries, which is common practice internationally. The Ministry of Energy and Water Resources copes with these challenges in a number of ways, including import of energy sources by sea, generation of energy from renewable sources and diversification in the supply of energy sources, to avoid dependence on limited supply sources. At the same time, the ministry is acting to reduce and intelligently manage demand to achieve savings and efficiency, while considering the needs of the national economy that require an increase in available energy and water sources.
The Vision of the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources
GovXParagraph2 The vision of the ministry includes a number of objectives, from which operative and regulatory steps are derived that will help Israel cope with tomorrow’s challenges for advancing a beautiful, efficient and environmentally friendly country, which is also capable of providing its citizens a reliable, effective infrastructure in the energy and water fields.
- Securing a supply of energy at a level of reliability, availability, efficiency and quality needed for a highly developed, modern national economy, at an optimal economic, social and environmental cost.
- Intelligent, effective exploitation of natural resources, which will secure sustainability for an extended period and correct preparation for natural risks, with long term planning of sustainable development, by creating a scientific technological basis and using it.
GovXParagraph3 The Ministry of Energy and Water Resources has defined a number of key objectives in the national energy economy, based on a strategic view that aims at reducing the dependence on crude oil imports, both because of the geo-political situation and economic and environmental cost. In order to meet these objectives and allow the country to realize its objectives in the energy and infrastructure fields, the Ministry encourages R&D for the development of renewable energy sources, oil alternatives, smart grids and water desalination, using novel, efficient technologies. Multi-annual goals
- Expansion of the supply and diversification of energy sources for the national economy and consumers.
- Advancement of the well-being of the national energy and mining economy, while improving product quality and prices and the service provided.
- Minimization of environmental effects created by energy facilities in the national economy.
Aiming to satisfy demands reliably and stably while conducting activity to reduce demand through economizing in the use of energy resources.
- Analysis of opportunities in natural resource inventories in Israel and securing their availability while conducting licensing processes and encouraging exploration and excavation activity.
